Which Klargester Fuel and Oil Separator Do I Need?
Klargester's range of fuel and oil separators, designed and manufactured in Ireland, ensure high performance across a range of applications. Surface water drains normally discharge to a watercourse or indirectly into underground waters via a soakaway. Contamination of surface water by oil, chemicals or suspended solids can cause these discharges to have a serious impact on the ground water. Oil separators are installed on surface water drainage systems to protect receiving waters from pollution by oil, due to minor leaks from vehicles and plant.
Separators are used in many applications such as:
- Garage Forecourts
- Car Parks
- Workshops
- Supermarket / Shopping Centres
- Distribution Warehouses
- Car Wash Bays
- Scrap Yards
- Car Garages
- Fuel Storage Sites
- Distribution/Haulage Centres
- Waste Transfer Sites
- Business/Commercial Parks/Industrial Estate
Full Retention Separators:
Klargester full retention separators have been designed for use in high-risk areas, such as roadways, fuel depots and car parks. Full retention separators treat the entire flow of surface water, making them ideal for areas where high spill risk exists, such as fuel distribution depots and vehicle workshops. These separators treat the full volume of water, including during heavy rain events, ensuring that no contaminated water bypasses the system. They are equipped with oil separation and silt storage capacities, and some models feature automatic closure devices that seal off flow in case of oil overflows
Product Highlights
- Can treat the equivalent flow of 65mm/hr rainfall
- This full retention interceptor unit is available in over 20 different specifications
- Designed for easy installation, saving you time and money
- Third-party certified to EN858 - 1 for peace of mind
- Fitted inlet/outlet connections
- Vent points within necks
- Maintenance from ground level
- GRP - PE Model construction - high strength and durability
- CE-marked

Bypass Separators:
Klargester bypass separators are used when it is considered an acceptable risk to not provide full treatment for very high flows, such as, where the risk of a large spillage and heavy rainfall occurring at the same time is small. During intense rain, excess water bypasses the separation chamber, ensuring the separator does not overflow.Typical applications include surface carparks, roadways and lightly contaminated commercial areas.
Product Highlights
- Engineered to achieve a concentration of less than 5mg per litre
- Treats the ‘first flush’, which is approximately 10% of the peak flow
- Can be maintained from ground level
- Light and easy to install, saving you time and money
- GRP or rotomoulded construction (subject to model)
- Inclusive of silt storage volume
- Fitted inlet/outlet connectors
- Vent points within necks
- Extension access shafts for deep inverts
- CE-marked

Forecourt Separators:
Klargester Petrol Forecourt Separators are designed to handle potential spillages from refuelling and delivery. These separators are specifically designed for petrol stations, where hydrocarbon pollutants like petrol and oil can contaminate surface water. Forecourt separators capture and retain hydrocarbons, preventing them from entering drainage systems and polluting local water sources All models comply with safety and environmental requirements.
Product Highlights
- Can be fitted to existing tanks on your site or forecourt
- Light and easy to install, saving you time and money
- Inclusive of silt storage volume
- Fitted inlet/outlet connectors
- Vent points within necks
- Extension access shafts for deep inverts
- Maintenance from ground level
- Oil storage volume
- Coalescer
- Automatic closure device

Washdown Separators and Silt Traps:
Designed for use in car washes and other cleaning facilities, the wastewater passes through our Kingspan Klargester washdown and silt traps where it is retained long enough to allow solids to sink to the bottom and remain in the tank. Washdown separators ensure that these contaminants are removed before the water enters sewage systems
Product Highlights
- Light and easy to install
- Maintenance from ground level
- Manufactured from durable, rot and corrosion-proof glass reinforced polyester

Surface Water Treatment Separators
The AquaTreat Surface Water Treatment range handles pollution from surface water runoff by removing suspended solids, hydrocarbons, and metals, making it suitable for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). These systems are particularly useful in industrial estates and roadways where environmental compliance is critical. Unlike traditional oil separators, they are focused on pollution control rather than certification under EN 858-1?.
Each separator type is designed to meet different operational needs based on risk levels and environmental factors. Factors such as site location, rainfall volume, and pollutant type must be considered when choosing the right system.
