What is HVO Fuel?
At Tanks.ie, our motto has always been to try and be as environmentally friendly as possible. In moving with the times, we are proud that our Atlas and Titan tanks are all HVO ready.
In Ireland, around 42% of energy used to heat homes is oil and as this fuel source is unsustainable, we need to be conscious of ways to heat our homes sustainably. For off grid homes there has not been an affordable or effective solution to decarbonising heating systems, until now. Burning oil currently produces high levels of CO2, and our ways to reduce this can help climate change for our planet, as outlined by 2050 net-zero carbon target.
One way of doing this within the heating oil sector is by HVO Fuels.
What is HVO Fuel?
HVO or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil is a fossil-free biofuel made from 100% renewable waste materials. Using Hydrogen as a catalyst, this is what differentiates between HVO and Biodiesel. HVO can be a direct replacement to kerosene as the properties are very similar.
What are the features of HVO?
- Cuts greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%
- Biodegradable and non-toxic
- Zero FAME, sulphur and fossil content
- Sustainably produced
- Absence of aromatics
- Higher flash point of 61 degrees Celsius
- Supported by OFTEC
Is HVO available now?
Currently there are lots of trials going on for HVO and if successful, then the roll out is likely to be with the 2020's to 2030's.
Can HVO work with older appliances and AGA's?
Current testing suggests that 'yes' HVO will work with existing appliances, after some small modifications.
Overall HVO is a new renewable fuel which could replace Heating oil, making it better for our environment.
