Choosing the right
GRP Sectional Divided IFB Airgap Tanks
in Ireland
An oil tank is a long-term investment — most domestic heating oil tanks in Ireland are expected to last 20–25 years when correctly sited and maintained. Whether you're replacing an old steel tank, building a new home or specifying for a commercial project, the right choice comes down to three things: capacity, tank type, and compliance with Irish regulations.
Bunded vs single-skin oil tanks
A bunded oil tank is a tank-within-a-tank — the inner tank holds the fuel, the outer tank captures any leak. Under Irish EPA guidance, bunded tanks are required for any installation over 2,500 litres, within 10 metres of a watercourse, or within 50 metres of a borehole or well. For most new domestic installations a bunded tank is the safer, more compliant choice.
Single-skin tanks remain suitable for replacement installations where site conditions allow, and typically come in at a lower price point. If you're unsure which applies to your site, talk to a specialist before you order.
What size oil tank do I need?
As a rough guide, a typical 3-bed home uses 1,500–2,000 litres of heating oil per year. A 1,200L–1,400L tank covers most domestic households with one or two deliveries a year; larger homes, oil-fired Aga or pool heating may justify a 1,800L–2,500L tank. Commercial and agricultural sites usually start at 5,000L.
- 1–2 bed home — 1,000L to 1,200L
- 3–4 bed home — 1,200L to 1,800L
- Large / rural home — 1,800L to 2,500L
- Commercial / agricultural — 5,000L upwards
